Whew. So glad that first draft is done and out of my system.

I finished my WIP early yesterday at 70,000 words, which will likely expand since I feel like I just dumped a load of crap to say I FINISHED the damn thing, now leave me alone. For some reason I was really questioning my writing abilities during this novel--my biggest issue in getting it done. Maybe I've been hanging around the Absolute Write Forums or author blogs too long, because all I could think about while I wrote was everyone else is writing Shakespearean lines and I'm writing, "See Spot. See Spot run. Run, Spot, run."

For the curious minds, I whipped up this quick synopsis: In the near future, the Ember Corporation has made it possible for the dead's souls--their memories--to be extracted from their minds. One such Soul Keeper, Wes, finds himself with a memory so dangerous, it could undo all of mankind. As he races to piece together the memory, he discovers extracting memories is only the first step in the Ember Corporation's plans. A sinister future awaits all the memories extracted, and the entire world.

After finishing my manuscript, I made a journey to the library. I'm the kind of girl who likes buying books. (Books are my shoes.) But, money's tight these days, so it's off to the library. I grabbed The Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler and The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary Pearson for research purposes on SciFi books in the market today, Irvine Welsh's Filth because I love me some Scottish male antics of booze, drugs, and women.

And then there's this one book I found in the YA section, John Marsden's Hamlet. Yes, it's a modern-ish retelling of the tale. I love Hamlet--I adore it and anything associated with it. I even have thoughts about writing an "updated" version of it. Hence me borrowing this version. I do not have high hopes for it after reading a couple reviews. Well, my hesitancy started with the backcover blurb, "[in reference to Marsden's Hamlet] I now get Hamlet!" I...what? The play is not that hard to understand once you cut through the prose, and have a well educated teacher and the Kenneth Branagh movie go along as you read. I suspect this version to be watered down like a swimming pool. I will be reading it first, then.

Also: Just read J.D. Salinger died. I suspect an announcement that a film version of Catcher in the Rye will soon follow--unless his estate has specific instructions to honor his lifelong request to not sell the book rights. Though, reading what his daughter had to say about him...they might be sold in spite.

Also-also: Totally unrelated but, in case anyone wanted to know, Showtime premiered Twilight on Saturday. Within the first 24 hours they played it FOUR TIMES. FOUR! That's twice a day. Plus it's OnDemand. Those sparkles, I tell ya, they spread faster than herpes in the male locker room.
