This is for Rhoda's benefit because I think I broke her brain when I admitted that I had never, ever seen The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] rhoda_rants: If you happen to be working on some creative writing project, fanfiction or NaNaWriMo or what have you, post exactly one sentence from each of your current works in progress in your journal.

The Book (tentatively titled THE IRON CITY):

The morning after my father disappeared, they said the air around the Porter Building tasted sharp and foul, as if the proud tower knew something had happened to its king and it now turned away anyone who dared approach it.

Then, I pulled other lines from other WIP's in various stages of completion that I'll (eventually) return to. Let's start in order:

I know there's a Myers Briggs/Character personality test going around. I decided to do a "twist" on it, and use it for my 3 main characters from The Book.

(For those wondering, I ended up with "ISFJ". I sorta fit it; but previously I had gotten "INTJ" which I think fits me a little more. Guess it depends on the day I take the thing.)

For The Book:
Yeah, but. . . )

List ten books that have stayed with you in some way. Don’t take but a few minutes and don’t think too hard — they don’t have to be the “right” or “great” works, just the ones that have touched you.

1. The Map of Time by Félix Palma

2. The Final Descent by Rick Yancey (the last book of the Monstrumologist series; only because this is the most recent book I've read and I AM SO MAD)

3. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

4. The Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer

5. A Series of Unfortunate Events (entire series) by Lemony Snicket

6. Blackout/All Clear by Connie Willis

7. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl

8. Death in the Haymarket by James Green (this book basically shaped what The Book would be about)

9. Kiss the Girls by James Patterson (I stole my mom's Alex Cross books from her beginning in 5th Grade...and I was way too young to be reading those things)

10. The Nancy Drew mysteries by Carolyn Keene (I burned through these things in 4th Grade ~memories)

How amazing is this poster celebrating the past Best Picture winners? I spent a good fifteen minutes playing "guess the movie" with myself. If I had more followers, I'd turn this into a meme. If anyone else wants to play along, leave your guesses in the comments/post to your own blog. (No cheating and going over to IMDB!) I've also italicized the ones I've seen.

Guesses this a'way )

Okay, once I got to 2002 it was easier to remember which movies had won in recent years.

And as for 2012's Best Picture, I'm going to go with Argo because lord knows the Academy likes giving Oscars out to movies that celebrate movies.

Just tying up some year-end loose ends over the next couple of days. First up, finishing my second resolution for this year, I only read 47 books this year, 9 of which were 2012 Debut Authors. If you don't recall, the goal was to read 12 debut books, so I'm 3 off my mark. I also mentioned wanting to read Gone with the Wind in 2012, which--looking at the list below--did not happen. Womp, womp.

Questions under here )
xerinmichellex: ([stock]: fountain pen)
1. I'll be so glad when Election Season is over and the phone-bank calls STOP. I think we're averaging 5 calls a day. Also, I was not aware that when I early voted 4 years ago, that information was going to be collected for the candidates. Twice, I've been asked if I plan on early voting again and if I need any information regarding the nearest polling place. (For the record, I early voted again on Friday.) I'm at the point where I'm not even answering the phone if I don't recognize the number. ALSO! If I don't pick up the phone the first time, calling 3 more times in a row isn't going to change the situation.

2. I knew watching Homeland live would be the death of me...but I had no idea I'd be in this much agony. Especially with everything that's gone down in the past two episodes. (I promise a post focusing on the show later, because a lot of what is happening is fascinating from a writer's perspective.) Now that Rupert Friend's character has been introduced--which, if you remember, was the initial reason I started watching Homeland--I am a very, very happy girl.

3. November's three days away, which means it's NaNo season. My first--and only successful NaNo year--was in 2009. And while I'm not (technically) participating in NaNo, I am using November to kick my butt into gear and get back into the rhythm of writing for most of the day. The last time I finished an actual manuscript was July 2010 (I checked). Back then, I was at the computer by 10 am and writing until 5 or 6 in the evening. So my goal this November isn't so much as getting to 50K, but it is getting back to this schedule. Of course, yesterday I realized that my WiP plot may not fit with my story; so I have three days to find a plot. No big deal. /sarcasm

4. And finally, a meme just in time for Halloween!

zombieplaylist_meme

1. "Left Behind" - Spring Awakening (Original Broadway Cast)
2. "Populace in Two" - From First to Last
3. "The Key (Instrumenal Clip)" - Emilie Autumn
4. "It Was You" - The Pierces
5. "Dead is the New Alive" - Emilie Autumn
6. "The Taste of Ink" - The Used
7. "2 Hearts" - Kylie Minogue
8. "The Point of it All" - Amanda Palmer

Eh, I think I'll skip this apocalypse. (If only #5 was #8 instead!)

1.) Anyone who looks at this entry has to post this meme and their current wallpaper.
2.) Explain in five sentences or less why you're using that wallpaper!
3.) Don't change your wallpaper before doing this!

So...I'm going to cheat because I'm between wallpapers and am using a plain one at the moment, and show you my last wallpaper which I had for a few months.

Saw this iPod meme floating around:

You can learn a lot about someone by the music they listen to. Hit shuffle on your iPod or mp3 player and write down the first 20 songs. No cheating or skipping songs that are shameful. That is the fun!

Okay, so not really a meme but I've seen this posted on a few other blogs, and out of simple curiosity I wanted to know what district I'd fall under. I was...better off not knowing.

Using this fan-made map (located at the top), apparently I live in District 10 which, according to the Hunger Games Wiki, is the livestock district. Here's the thing, I could see this being accurate seeing as Chicago had the Stockyards for many, many years; although the last animal to be processed there was in the '70's. However, in Hunger Games Land, District 10 only raises the livestock; the animals get slaughtered someplace else. Also, where I live it's pretty built-up. There is hardly a strip of land to raise actual cattle/pigs/chickens on. There's an ol' timey milking farm nearby and that's it of our farmland. All the viable farmland is to the north of us, going into Wisconsin and to the south. (There's a reason why Cook County--the county I live in and that also incorporates Chicago--is considered a whole different state compared to the rest of Illinois.)

So what I'm trying to say is that if this map is accurate, and Illinois is part of District 10, and our only job is to raise the cattle, and if the Capitol wanted to keep us all in line and focus on just raising the livestock, then I'm pretty sure Chicago and all its suburbs have been wiped off the map. Basically I'm homeless and probably dead. *sad face*

I'm actually proud to say I've done stuff; even though, in my mind, I think I've lived a pretty boring existence.

Bold what you've done )

As you can see, I would not choose Dauntless. Surprisingly though, some of these experiences are on my bucket list, like traveling to Europe. So I might be able to squeeze a few more life experiences out.

Saw this on the Absolute Write forum and thought it'd be fun. (Clearly I am also looking for and finding all sorts of things to procrastinate with. Clearly.)

“The BBC believes most people will have read only 6 of the 100 books listed here.”

Instructions:
•Copy this list.
•Bold those books you’ve read in their entirety.
•Italicise the ones you started but didn’t finish or read only an excerpt.

The List )

So...17 books on this list. However, many are on my "to-read" list. I just need to find the time to read them.

(An aside: I'm officially half-way through my reading challenge. I might actually read 100 books this year.)

I've been meme-slapped by [livejournal.com profile] rhoda_rants to list 10 of my favorite things that start with the letter "P." I didn't realize until now how few of my interest begin with that letter--so if this list looks haphazard, odd, and just plain "WTF?", it's because it is. Yes, I cheated with a few things...c'mon, I was grasping at straws here.
